When you’re thinking about career, what is the first thing that pops into your mind? Is it money? Is it a promotion? Is it satisfaction? Take a moment and figure this out.
If career means something valuable to you, it should be strongly linked with passion, values, and a desire to build something for your future. If, on the other hand, career means strictly money, power, and promotions, then you might want to reconsider your perspective.
Not that wishing to have more money, or a better-paid position is wrong – not at all. What’s wrong is not understanding why you want these things. If that’s the case, then your career will shape your world, and not the other way around. This is when your career becomes overrated and you start losing sight of your values.
So, let’s see how you could shape your career after your values, and become successful at it. Here are some important questions to consider.
What are your values?
The first thing you must do is write down your values. Think about this aspect for a while, if you need to. What do you value most in other people? What do you value most in yourself? What can you not stand? My values are honesty, loyalty, courage, and curiosity. I would never lie, betray, or back off from a challenge. Thus, I could never work as an attorney, for example. I could not represent a client whose values don’t match mine.
Now it’s your turn. What can you do, and what can you not do? Write down a list. Find your limits. Know your boundaries.
Do you know what success means to you?
Every person in this world has a unique definition of success. For some, success means owning a business. For others, it can mean working on a cruise ship, offering assignment help as a freelancer, or publishing a book. Understanding your personal definition of success is highly important. It will give you the incentive to work toward your goal. It will also help you understand what you want out of life and put you on the right track to get it.
How do you approach a goal?
Now that you know your values and have a clear destination in mind, it’s time to set a goal. But how do you approach it?
First, think about your first step. If, say, you’re working in a company that cannot support your goal, quit. This is your first step. Second, find companies that could guide you towards your objective. If your objective is starting a business, then do that, and forget all about another company.
But always map out a strategic plan before making any decisions.
What is the difference between passion and profession?
This is the most important point we’re discussing today – the difference between passion and profession. This is where all the answers lay.
What are your passions? Write down some of your biggest passions. What do you like to do? What do you like to read? What do you like to talk about?
Are your passions and profession meeting each other half-way? Write down where they do, and where they don’t. If they don’t really, could you turn your passion into money? If so, what are your options?
Can you make your own decisions?
Now it’s time to self-analyze yourself. Be honest with yourself when answering this question: do you let other people make decisions for you? Think well about it, take some time if you need. Try to remember if any family members or friends pressured you to make career decisions. If so, why did you let them? Did you feel positive about it? If not, what can you change to change your life?
Should you follow someone or go your own way?
In this modern world, even the word career means a lot. So, following someone you respect to guide you on your career journey is not wrong. However, stepping on your values to get approval from these people is wrong. This is when your career becomes overrated.
So, yes, follow the mentors that’ll bring you closer to success, but be confident enough to stand your ground and know your limits.

- You will not withstand by your values because…
- You would be willing to step on them to protect your position
- You wouldn’t feel satisfied at the end of each day
- You’d have a life you’d want to escape from
- You’d have no personal time
- You might lose the desire to go to work
- You could become a workaholic
- You wouldn’t make time for what matters
