7 Ways To Work Effectively From Home

7 tips to work effectively from home

Working from home has many benefits, but it also brings the lure of procrastination. Whatever type of job or industry you are in, working from home will require discipline to make sure that you are being productive and staying on top of your workload. Here are 7 top tips to help you make remote working a success.

1. Get Dressed And Create A Routine

It may sound trivial, but making sure that you get up at the usual time, shower and get dressed in proper clothes can make a big difference. Sticking to your usual morning routine will help signal to your brain that it’s time to work and will greatly help you to get into a work mindset.

2. Create A Workspace

Creating a workspace in your home is crucial to successfully working from home.

“Ideally you would want to be in a separate room. This will signal to your spouse and family that you are working,” says Kathy Rommel, a productivity expert at Academized and My Writing Way. “Alternatively, try to work at a desk or failing that, use your dining room table. Make sure you have all the necessary equipment to hand, try to make the space feel like an office and make sure it’s clutter-free. Avoid sitting on your sofa or bed – that is a recipe for disaster!”

3. Set Working Hours

Set a working schedule and make sure you stick to it. If possible, try to mimic the same working hours you would have at the office. It can be easy to procrastinate or get distracted with household chores or the TV. Although working from home can offer greater flexibility, you need to ensure that you set aside dedicated working hours where you won’t be distracted or interrupted and can focus on completing your work.

4. Get Organized

It can be easy to get side-tracked whilst working from home. In order to help you focus and to maximize your output, create a to-do list of the tasks that you need to complete each day. You might also find it useful to create a weekly outline of the tasks you need to have accomplished during the upcoming week and ensure that you schedule time effectively to complete them all. Make sure that you actually do everything on your to-do list, otherwise you’ll find yourself falling further behind each day.

5. Stay Connected

Making sure that you are staying connected with your team and supervisor is important, even when working from home.

“There is plenty of technology available to help keep you connected to your team,” says Marcus Warren, a HR at Letsgoandlearn and WritingPopulist. “During working hours, make sure to check in regularly with your team, just as you would if you were at the office. Another great strategy is to share your to-do lists with your supervisor so that they are aware of your progress. In fact, this can be a great opportunity for you to shine. It’s also a good idea to schedule in some video or phone conferencing, through Skype, WhatsApp or Zoom, regularly throughout the week. It will help keep the whole team on track and keep everyone motivated.”

6. Reduce Distractions

Working from home requires discipline and that means limiting your distractions.

“If you’re working on a computer, online distractions are your enemy,” says Barbara Myers, a writer at Gradeonfire and Studentwritingservices. “When you start working, make sure that you have all the resources you need to hand, ready to go. Then make sure you close any tabs or websites that aren’t work-related, especially anything on social media! If you can, turn off your Wi-Fi and any other devices you don’t need and make sure that you put your phone on silent or at the very least, turn off your notifications.”

7. Look After Yourself

It’s important to look after yourself. That means eating healthily, avoiding snacks and making sure that you schedule in a proper lunch break. Try to get some fresh air, whether by having some windows open, or if you can, going for a short walk. Make sure you regularly stand up and move around or stretch a little bit. It can also be a great opportunity to work out at home during the time you would usually be commuting into work.
