When the Summer Romance Ends

Dating Advice post that I wrote for Answers.com

RomanceThere is something about the summer heat that sparks passion, romance and new flings. A summer romance is always exciting, however, when summer ends and fall comes around the reality of life sets in. High School and college begins, many high school relationships end, people move for school or have to travel for a new job. When a breakup happens avoid doing something drastic like getting a tattoo, cutting bangs, or dyeing your hair blonde. Heartbreak is never easy; you’re allowed to cry and scream into a pillow. But, there comes a time where we need to put on our big girl panties on, channel our inner confidence and move on with your head held high. If your ready to take the next step these tips are great to help you feel strong and forge ahead.

Plan Ahead

If you are planning to initiate the split before you do, try to anticipate likely problems and your thoughts in order before you break the news. Think about important decisions that you will have to make like how the breakup will effect your circle of friends, how you are going to divide your shared belongings, and how you are going to heal. The spontaneous breakup is always more painful due to the responsibilities that come along with it, so it is best to plan ahead.

Facebook Break Up

Social media is causing women to fall into a dangerous trap of ex obsession. Your relationship is only your business, which is why it is not necessary to change your status to, “In a relationship” until you are engaged or married. When it is time for the public breakup it is important that your comfortable with the idea of being single before you put it out there for everyone to know. Get yourself centered before you make the Facebook breakup public.

Try An “Obsession Diet”

Instead of obsessing over your Ex’s social media accounts, obsess about making yourself even better, even hotter, even stronger. There is always an eating regiment or workout plan that we wish we had time for or wish we had the will power to stick to, NOW is the time to do it. This will keep you focused, and help boost your self-esteem. When you work up a sweat, your body releases endorphins, which kill the pain better than any other remedy.

Give Back

After a breakup, we tend to feel sorry for ourselves and plan our own pity party. Instead of drowning everyone and yourself in your sorrows, get involved in something bigger than yourself. Performing acts of kindness towards others have proven to improve well-being and help relieve depression. Giving back can be a powerful way to re-focus on what is important in life.

Go Out On The Town

Yes, we all need time to heal but, after a break it is best to surround yourself with friends and family right away. Do not stay home in bed with a tub of ice cream; instead put your best party dress on and go dance your booty off. Dancing is excellent because it not only burns calories and builds muscle, it also contributes to an overall sense of happiness.

The infamous line, “lets be friends” may or may not work for you. It can be difficult to heal if you and your ex continue to keep in touch. As harsh as it sounds, try to cut the cord; that means no more texting. In order to move on you need to realize that you can feel comfortable being single. Many people can relate to what a broken heart feels like. Be sure to share your feelings with friends and family and talk it out instead of bottling up your emotions.
