Let’s Stop the Silence

You may have heard me mention before that I was bullied in school.  Since then putting an end to bullying has become on of my deepest passions.  This is why I want to tell you about the Day of Silence, happening this coming Friday, April 19th. Students across the country will take a vow of silence to call attention to the silencing effect of anti-LGBT bullying and harassment in schools.

Recently we have seen in the media that throughout the country, schools have begun to take a tougher stance against bullying.  However, many acts of bullying are either unseen by school officials or are still being handled ineffectively. Also, cyberbullying can start on school grounds thanks to cell phones and continues to happen after school as well. The Day of Silence is an effort against bullying LGBT students in schools and everywhere else.

As someone who can relate to the pain, sadness and frustration of bullying, I hope that our schools will continue to increase efforts against the harassment of young people.  I also hope that by using our voices (or by not using them in this case), we can show that bullying in any form will not be tolerated.  Even with more of an effort being paid to bullying, there are still too many stories to count about young people who are being bullied right now.

A bully may seem confident and controlling.  The truth, however, is that they are the weak ones because they feel the need to bring others down.  Whether they admit it or not, bullies are typically experiencing a situation that is causing sadness or confusion.  They take it out on others as a way to feel better and to gain back some sense of control.  We all know that there is nothing cool about purposely trying to make others feel badly about themselves, no matter what the reason. Every time I wanted to stand up for my self against my bullies I remembered my mom telling me, “Always kill them with kindness because in the end you will come out smelling like a rose.”

Taking this vow on the Day of Silence is making a powerful statement about the important issue of anti-LGBT bullying. To learn more about the Day of Silence, go to: http://dayofsilence.com/.  You can also follow the conversation on Twitter at #DayofSilence or on Facebook at:  https://www.facebook.com/NationalDayofSilence.
