Raise your hand if you want to be a worker bee for the rest of your life? Or would you rather be the Queen (or King) bee? So for those who strive to ascend to the top, here are 5 things I’ve collected on my way to the top that I’d like to pass to you.
- NEVER SAY NO: If your supervisor gives a task you don’t want to do or think you cannot handle, do it anyway, the best you can and if you have questions, ask an experienced co-worker how to do it.
- NEVER COMPLAIN: Do not complain to your boss or fellow co-workers. If something rubs you the wrong way or you are having issues, have a conversation with the powers-that-be in a constructive way. “I’m having a tough time with this task, how can I do this in a way that works?”
- BE A CHAMELEON: Be ready and willing to adapt to change when given responsibilities or asked to step-in to do something.
- GET TO KNOW EVERYONE: Have small talks that have nothing to do with work with everyone, from the big boss to the guy who refills the paper towels in the bathroom. For one, it’s nice to be acknowledged and will be appreciated. Not only that, I’ve seen it many times, that runner, mailroom guy or assistant becomes Vice President or Executive Producer just like THAT.
- NETWORK, NETWORK, NETWORK: Stay in touch with people you work with and with anyone you ever meet as much as possible. Going back to #4, I’ve taken a moment and had a 5-minute conversation with someone and then been able to call on him or her years later for work or to set-up a connection. It takes effort to stay in touch with people but with social media networking and technology, it is easier to do more than ever.
Listen, there are no absolutes in life, I’m very aware there are bosses, supervisors and co-workers who you will not be able to or even want to get to know or that you can always say “Yes” to. But do these 5 things as much as possible and it will help you on your way to the top. As for those people who are toxic in your workplace, I’ll address that in my next piece. Until then, keep at it.
