It is clear that second jobs are the new normal amongst Generation Y. While student loan debt is always the named influencer for side hustles, there is a much deeper level to this activity. Most people can sum up their reasons for side hustling into 3 major categories. I am a full supporter of side hustles as long as you schedule time for yourself and have fun while participating in them. But the most important aspect of the side hustle is to have a long term goal in mind. There is no point in working hard without an obtainable dream.
First Step – Identify Your Category
The “To Be Debt Free & Beyond” Hustle: I am definitely in this category. Student loans have taken a toll on my finances and I want to be divorced from Sallie Mae as soon as possible. But debt is not always within the student loan sector. Many millenials face debt with car payments, college credit cards, and just frivolous spending. Side hustles can make you financially stable or it can cater to your bad spending habits. As a proud member of this group, I put the paycheck from my side hustle into a savings account. Just because you have debt does not mean that you can’t save for your financial future.
The “Overachiever” Hustle: These folks are the Type- A overachieving crowd. These are the kids in high school who ran every club, had 20 extracurricular activities and crafted resume as long as a dissertation. But their side hustles are not just something to add to their resume and ongoing activities list. Their extra jobs are actually setting themselves up for something greater. Many people are searching for their dream careers and the Overachievers are no different. Using their side hustle to identify their passions and collect coins is something to be admired. While some might use their second income to fund new ventures, others will save their dollars and spend them on the next great vacation or their first rent-to-own purchase. Regardless, it is never a bad idea to get paid while exploring all of your options and possibilities.
The “Boredom” Hustle: I’ve met someone in this category and she was very fascinating. She told me that all of her friends were too busy to hang out after work and on the weekends, so she found a hobby that transformed into a job. While I am not an advocate of anyone spending their free time with activities that do not interest them, I definitely support people turning their free time into something positive and enjoyable. Life can already be stressful with one job and you don’t need to add more stress to your palette. Everyone needs a break! But if you can find a recreation that you love and cashes a check, I completely approve.
Second Step – Embrace It
More professionals are striving for financial freedom or the next great adventure. But how many of them are outwardly proud of their side hustle? We live in an age where perception is everything. Between twitter, facebook, blogs, tabloids, and Beyonce always giving complete perfection, it is difficult to be realistic about your reality. You should never be embarrassed about your second job because it appears that no one else has “grown up” struggles. Every person on your social media page has their version of life adversities. Their lack of communication around their adversity should never make you feel inadequate. Be proud of your determination and the hard work that you are doing to place yourself in a better financial position.
Your journey is exclusive to your opportunities and decisions. Do not be afraid of your second job and your willingness to succeed and be the best you!
Happy Hustlin’!
Much Love,

Great post! I am certainly the “To be debtfree and beyond hustle.” I am no where close to being debt free but I’m working on it, and I’ll get there sooner than later…hopefully. In the meantime I’m using my side hustles to add meaning to my life – my main gig is awesome – but I want the freedom to go and come as I please and not be tied to someone else’s dreams!
