All that is missing is you….

All our lives we are told to go for it, work hard and you can achieve anything, don’t be afraid to try… Does any of this sound familiar? If so, then when the time comes to take that first or even next career step where will the picture frame capture you? Will the camera be focused on you or the setting?

Keep that image in mind and ask yourself, “is it more important for you to love what you do or love where you live?” You see, there are those that would do anything just be able to let’s say live by the ocean. They are fulfilled by their surroundings and what allows them to be there is secondary. On the other hand, there are people who absolutely love what they do let’s say a teacher, or entrepreneur, and where they live really isn’t a high priority for them. So which describes you? Perhaps you are somewhere in between and just beginning to explore your options.

If that is the case, then here are a few tips to consider:

1. You understand the cost of living where you are now but what about where you are headed? This is an important consideration as you explore your options.

2. Relocating doesn’t have to be permanent but you shouldn’t do it on a whim either. Consider your future, how far away from family will you be? Do you see yourself making friends easily? Perhaps finding a spouse or starting a family in this new location?

3. Do you personally have any special needs or interests? How reasonably can they be met in a new location?

4. Ask for input and suggestions and from friends, family and those who have made the decision to start someplace new. Use this research to help you feel confident in your decision but remember they only offering their opinion, you must make the decision based on what is right for you.

5. Lastly, the key to making any move work is to really get involved as soon as you can. Explore, find a new yoga studio, Indian restaurant, coffee shop, volunteer opportunities. This will allow you meet people and create a sense of home and community not a sense of alone.
