Tips for Moving To A New City

No matter where you might be in your life – just graduated to mid-career – pulling up your roots and moving across the country from one state to another could lead to big headaches if you are unprepared. Having recently moved from California to Florida, I understand first-hand exactly what goes into such a big move! Moving can be expensive! If you prepare a good checklist and plan ahead for the financial commitments it requires before you start your new moving adventure, you can not only save yourself time, but money as well.

truckIt’s definitely important to think about the expenses associated with moving, and plan these out way ahead of time- especially if you plan to help finance part of your move on a credit card. I would definitely recommend making a list of different moving companies and do your due diligence. Call around and find out who is going to give you the best rate. Spending just a little bit of time doing this can save you a ton of money in the long run. It could not hurt to let them know when you call, that you are calling around to get the best rate. Let them know what the other rates are – maybe they will beat them!

If you do plan to finance part of your move on a credit card, then the BuyPower Card from Capital One is a great option. Like I said, moving is expensive! You may as well be earning rewards for the money you are spending, right? Every purchase with the BuyPower Card gives you Earnings toward the purchase or lease of a new Chevrolet, Buick, GMC or Cadillac vehicle. Plus, your Earnings do not expire and all GM dealers participate nationwide. So no matter what city you are moving to, you can still use your Earnings once you’re ready to upgrade to a new car! Cardholders receive 5% Earnings on their first $5,000 in purchases each year, then 2% unlimited Earnings on purchases after that. Interested? When packing up for your big move, make sure you save out the essentials you will need in between the move. To make it easier once you get there, be sure to label your boxes – “kitchen” “bathroom” “closet” – it makes the unpacking process so much easier! I also love utilizing wardrobe boxes – you can fit so much in them! Clothes, shoes, pillows, and so much more can be stored in a space-saving way that’s easy to move from place to place.

Once you arrive in your new city, a great way to plan for success is to treat the experience as a long-term vacation before making large financial commitments on a home or vehicle. Renting, ideally month-to-month, gives you time to discover your ideal location. If you go this route you can also consider a roommate. Not only will that help you keep your costs down as you save towards big-ticket items like a house, but you will also have someone to help you get to know your new city!

If you have decided to make a big move, just remember: have a great checklist, do your research, and plan ahead. This will help you have an enjoyable move, instead of a stressful one!
