Why Silicon Valley wants Millennials

Silicon Valley, home to some of the world’s largest technology corporations and newest startups. Y-Combinator, Oculus Rift, hacker houses, Material Design. These are some of the buzzwords you hear everyday in the Bay Area. For much of my generation and the people around me, we grew up with technology so we know how exciting it is to think about and imagine working on the most innovative technology to make it even better than it already is. Silicon Valley is hungry for millennials like us and here’s why.

1. The only thing we have to worry about is ourselves.

This is the only time in our lives where the only thing we should be worrying about is ourselves. We’re not tied down to a spouse or have a family or a house to take care of. We can afford to take risks and go all out on crazy ideas while living in a box and eating cup noodles all day. We have time to contribute to building innovative new technology at tech giants, like Google and Facebook. Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Facebook once said, “If you want to found a successful company, you should only hire young people with technical expertise. Young people just have simpler lives. Simplicity in life allows you to focus on what’s important.

2. We want to make a difference in the world.

Now, more than ever, our world is completely connected. We genuinely believe that we have the power to make a difference. We’ve grown up in a world with war and hunger but we are still optimistic and believe that we are still capable of changing it to create a brighter future.

According to a survey from Telefonica, of 12,000 Millennials in 27 countries, our generation has a lot of hope, in spite of the many global crises we have witnessed.

The technology industry definitely notices this and is hungry for our passion to make a change. Technology is advancing at an exponential rate. With it’s fast-paced growth put together with our optimism to make a difference, the possibilities are endless for us.

3. We’ve grown up with technology and we know what’s best for it.

We are the first generation to grow up with the pleasure of technology at our fingertips. Do you even remember a world without cell phones, texting, handheld video games, social media, or even portable music players? While previous generations had to learn how to use it, it came naturally to us. Working in an industry we’ve grown up in and have been exposed to us has many benefits. We know what works and what doesn’t work and we have a solid vision for what’s to come next.

So you’re convinced that Silicon Valley is the perfect place for you but you know nothing about programming? Don’t worry! You don’t have to be a Computer Science student to work in the Bay Area! According to an article by Mashable.com, there are many other majors that can help land you a career in tech: Marketing, Visual and Industrial Design, Electrical and Mechanical Engineering, Statistics, Data Science, Finance, and Business Management. These aren’t the only majors as well. I’ve spent a summer in Silicon Valley and have met people from so many backgrounds ranging from Psychology to History! Silicon Valley is one of the best places to be for a Millennial right now and if you believe you belong here, go for it! Don’t let anything stop you.
